Charles Yu
United States
Formally inventive, screenplay directions standing in for narration: satire sharp enough to make typecasting feel like an entire trapped life.
Yu was born in Los Angeles to Taiwanese immigrant parents, trained as a lawyer, and worked in corporate law before turning to fiction and, later, television writing for shows including Westworld and Legion.
Interior Chinatown (2020) is formatted entirely as a screenplay, following Willis Wu, a background actor perpetually cast as 'Generic Asian Man' and cycling through Hollywood's narrow catalogue of Asian stereotypes, the form itself dramatizing how thoroughly Asian American identity has been scripted by roles others assigned it; it won the National Book Award.
He has continued writing fiction and for television, and adapted Interior Chinatown into a limited series, remaining based in Los Angeles.
