Damon Galgut

Galgut published his first novel as a teenager in apartheid-era South Africa and spent decades building a body of spare, interior fiction (The Good Doctor and In a Strange Room among them) that drew comparisons to Coetzee without ever quite matching his sales or prizes, shortlisted for the Booker twice before he won it.

The Promise, published in 2021, finally took the Booker on a third nomination, following one Afrikaner family across four funerals and three decades, each death circling back to a broken promise to give their Black servant the house she'd been owed. Its restless, camera-like narration (sliding between characters' minds within single sentences) was singled out by the judges as a formal answer to South Africa's own unresolved reckoning. Galgut lives in Cape Town and continues to write and teach.
