Hernán Diaz

Diaz was born in Buenos Aires, raised partly in Sweden after his family fled Argentina's military dictatorship, and later settled in New York, where he earned a doctorate in comparative literature and edits the Revista Hispánica Moderna at Columbia University.

Trust (2022) tells the story of a fabulously wealthy Wall Street financier and his enigmatic wife through four successive, mutually contradicting texts (a novel, an unfinished memoir, a ghostwriter's account, and finally a private diary), each one dismantling the credibility of the one before it and interrogating who gets to author history's official record; it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2023, shared with Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead.

His debut novel, In the Distance, a formally unconventional Western, had already been a Pulitzer finalist, and Diaz has continued exploring questions of language, identity, and financial power across his fiction.
